The 4th edition of HKUST’s annual Underwater Robot Competition came to a close on April 15 and Lutheran School for The Deaf emerged as the ultimate winner from a field of 30.

Three preliminaries were held over the last two weeks to select 30 teams for the finals on April 14 and 15. 30 finalists participated in both Interschool and group competitions, where they designed and refined their own underwater robots to compete and complete a series of underwater missions.

Lutheran School for The Deaf, which finished 2nd from its group, competed against Yuk Yin School, who advanced despite not finishing top in the group stages in the finals. SAHK B M Kotewell Memorial School finished 3rd and also won the Best Teamwork Award and the Best Engineering Award.

The Best Artistic Award went to SKH Chui Oi Primary School (Lei Muk Shue). Other Best Engineering Award winners include SKH Yan Leap Memorial Primary School, St Paul’s Secondary School, and Fuk Tak Education Society Primary School.

All teams were given guidance and advice by HKUST student mentors from the engineering department to assist them to build robots of their own (HKUST Robotics Team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qep1lvFzrVE&feature=youtu.be).
