Underwater Robot Competition ignites SEN students’ innovation and creativity

March 4, 2018

HKUST Underwater Robot Competition, now in its fourth year, is a competition organized to promote iSTEAM (Inclusion, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education among the wider community. Students from mainstream schools and those with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities, the underprivileged as well as ethnic minorities joined together to take part and build their own underwater robots.

More than 370 participants from 54 teams are joining this competition in 2018. An underwater robot building workshop was held for them on March 3, 2018. Technical support, robot-building guidance, safety advice and logistic support from students of 3 universities (The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Lingnan University) was enlisted in ensuring participants to learn iSTEAM while building robots which will be used to complete different underwater challenges in the preliminaries to be held on March 4, 10 and 11. Only 30 teams will make it to the finals on April 14 and 15.

The Underwater Robot Competition is one of the main activities under the HSBC / HKUST Robotics For Youths Programme. Sponsored by HSBC, the programme offers a unique platform for iSTEAM (Inclusion, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education over three consecutive academic years (2017-2020).

More activities will be held throughout the year to raise iSTEAM awareness among the young generation in Hong Kong.
